DHAKA: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar discussed regional and global issues, including developments in the Middle East, during a meeting in Mumbai on Tuesday.
The talks focused on expanding bilateral energy trade, strengthening defence cooperation and advancing civil nuclear collaboration between the United States and India, according to a readout issued by the US Department of State on October 20.
Rubio emphasised that increased energy trade with the United States could help India diversify its energy supply chains while meeting the demands of its large consumer market.
He also welcomed recent progress in bilateral defence and civil nuclear cooperation and advocated greater Indian purchases of US technologies and systems.
According to the US readout, such purchases could enhance the security and prosperity of both countries.
The meeting comes as Washington and New Delhi continue to pursue closer economic and strategic ties, with energy diversification, defence technology and regional security remaining important areas of engagement.
The two sides also exchanged views on wider regional and international developments, including the evolving situation in the Middle East.
