Garment sector wage board gazette to be issued within two days of nominations.
Minister of Labour and Employment Ariful Haque Chowdhury today said that the gazette for the formation of a Wage Board for the garment sector will be issued within two days after getting the workers' nominees.
He made the announcement during a press briefing on labour unrest and the wage board at the CIRDAP International Conference Centre here.
The Minister noted that the government and the employers have already submitted the names of their representatives for the wage board. The government is now waiting for the nominees of the workers. He urged the labour leaders to hold discussions and nominate their representatives within the next week.
Ariful Haque Chowdhury stated that once the names of the workers' nominees are received, the gazette will be issued within two days, provided there are no public holidays.
Addressing the issue of outstanding wages, he urged the employers to take necessary steps to ensure payment. He added that the government would reach out to the factory owners where wages remain unpaid to facilitate prompt settlement.
Emphasizing the need for the workers, employers and the government to work together to resolve labour unrest, the Minister suggested that any issues arising within a factory should be addressed internally. In such cases, labour unions, employers' associations and the government will provide the necessary support.
He urged the workers to refrain from taking to the streets and disrupting traffic. Simultaneously, he called upon the relevant government agencies to take necessary measures to prevent external parties those unaffiliated with the workers or employers from manufacturing issues to incite chaos.
The Minister stressed that the country’s development must be advanced by protecting the interests of both workers and employers, while ensuring that industrial operations continue. He affirmed that the government is prepared to work tirelessly for the welfare of the workers.
He expressed his hope that, following the discussions and decisions reached during the tripartite meetings, all stakeholders will act responsibly to resolve the labour unrest.
Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment Md Abdur Rahman Tarafder moderated the session where representatives from both the employer and workers delivered their speeches
