276 Drivers to Be Honoured on National Road Safety Day October 28
The Road Transport and Highways Division (RTHD) will honour 276 skilled and professional drivers across the country on the occasion of National Road Safety Day-2026.
The honour will be given on October 28, with 20 drivers recognised at the central level in the capital while four from each district at the district level, according to the official documents of the RTHD.
The initiative has been taken to encourage skilled drivers, motivate them toward responsible driving and raise public awareness to prevent road accidents in order to ensure road safety.
To this end, a meeting held on October 12 with RTHD Secretary Dr. Mohammed Ziaul Haque in the chair, reviewed preparations for observing the National Road Safety Day and progress in implementing the programmes.
The meeting decided to conduct health check-ups, awareness activities at educational institutions, repair of road signs, signals and road markings, and a nationwide campaign, alongside honouring the drivers.
Talking to BSS, RTHD Secretary Dr Mohammad Ziaul Haque said, "Skilled and responsible drivers play an important role in building safe roads. The initiative to give this honour has been taken to recognise their professional skills and good work."
He said, "We want drivers to abide by traffic laws and give the highest priority to the safety of passengers and pedestrians."
Officials familiar with the process said there is a plan to create healthy competition in the transport sector by recognising the skills, professionalism and contribution to road safety of the drivers who will be honoured.
However, detailed information about the specific criteria for selecting the drivers needs to be officially confirmed.
Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) Chairman Mohammad Habibur Rahman told BSS that the skills of professional drivers, their tendency to abide by traffic laws and their habit of safe driving are important in reducing road accidents.
"It is possible to further strengthen road safety through training of drivers, raising awareness and necessary health check-ups."
A roadshow will be organised in front of Sarak Bhaban in the capital at 10 am on October 28 on the occasion of the day.
Various stakeholders of the road transport sector will take part in it. Concerned organisations, including the BRTA, Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA), Roads and Highways Department, Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) and Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), owners' and workers' organisations and road safety organisations will cooperate in implementing the programme.
