JASHORE, July 1: To help combat the impacts of climate change and promote biodiversity conservation, the voluntary organization Nobochetona Action for Change (NAFC) has launched a two-month Green School Campaign and Afforestation Program across Jashore District.
As part of the initiative, an awareness session on afforestation, environmental conservation, and climate change was held on Wednesday at Bahadurpur Secondary School in Jashore Sadar. Following the session, students were provided with a variety of fruit-bearing and medicinal tree saplings to encourage tree planting and foster environmental stewardship.
The event was attended by Tushar Chakraborty, founder of NAFC; Mohammad Ataur Rahman, Deputy Director of the Department of Environment, Jashore; Jahid Hasan Tukun, President of the Jashore Press Club; A.K.M. Shariful Anam Azad, Head Teacher of Bahadurpur Secondary School; Moniruzzaman Monir, former President of NAFC; Md. Milon Sheikh, Chief Coordinator of NAFC; social and cultural activist Rakib Ud-Doula Shuvro; businessman and social activist Sheikh Zia; Ataullah Sayed; and NAFC's Green Volunteers.
Addressing the gathering, the speakers stressed that creating a livable planet for future generations and protecting biodiversity require environmental education and action to begin at the school level. They said school-based initiatives play a crucial role in raising awareness among students while contributing to the development of a greener, more sustainable, and climate-resilient Bangladesh.
The speakers also emphasized that fostering a culture of tree planting and encouraging students to take an active role in environmental conservation can help mitigate the long-term risks of climate change. They noted that alongside government initiatives, the active participation of young people is essential to ensuring a sustainable future.
According to NAFC, the Green School Campaign and Afforestation Program was launched on June 5 to mark World Environment Day and will continue through the end of July. The campaign is being implemented in educational institutions across Jashore District to strengthen environmental awareness, promote tree planting, and inspire students to play an active role in protecting biodiversity and addressing the challenges of climate change.
