Nihon Buyo to showcase poetry of movement at Japan Festival 2026

DHAKA, September 16, 2026: The graceful movements and rich symbolism of Nihon Buyo, Japan’s traditional dance form, will be among the cultural attractions at Japan Festival 2026 in Dhaka on September 18.

The Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh highlighted Nihon Buyo on its official Facebook page on Wednesday, describing the traditional art as a form in which even the smallest movement can convey profound meaning.

In Nihon Buyo, performers use carefully controlled gestures, postures and movements to express emotions, stories and imagery. A simple gesture can evoke elements of nature or everyday life, allowing the dance to communicate without relying solely on words.

The Japanese traditional dance form is known for its emphasis on grace, precision and restraint. Movements are often deliberate and highly stylised, with performers using fans and other traditional props to enhance the visual expression.

The embassy's post described the art as “dance is poetry made visible”, highlighting how a fan, for instance, can be transformed through movement into an image as evocative as the moon.

The performance at Japan Festival 2026 is expected to offer Bangladeshi audiences an opportunity to experience an important element of Japan's traditional performing arts and gain a deeper appreciation of its distinctive aesthetics.

Japan Festival 2026 will be held on September 18, bringing Japanese cultural traditions and contemporary cultural expressions to audiences in Bangladesh.
