Narayanganj garment factories resume production as worker unrest subsides
Normalcy has returned to Narayanganj's garment industrial zone after several days of worker unrest and road blockades over minimum wage demands, with workers returning to factories Thursday morning, restoring production and easing tensions across the industrial area.
No workers were seen staging protests or blocking roads along the Dhaka-Narayanganj connecting road or other highways and regional roads since morning. Public transport and other vehicles were also seen plying normally, restoring the usual bustle of the industrial areas.
A visit to different parts of the district's industrial zone in the morning found workers joining their respective shifts at factories as usual, while production activities continued without any reported disruption.
Earlier, workers from different factories in Narayanganj, including Fatullah, staged demonstrations from Monday to Wednesday, demanding a revision of the minimum wage.
Narayanganj Superintendent of Police Habibur Rahman said no incidents of unrest had been reported so far today.
He said law enforcement agencies remained on high alert to maintain stability and security and prevent any fresh outbreak of violence.
Meanwhile, additional security measures have been taken at key points across the industrial zone to avert any untoward incidents.
Security personnel, supported by armoured vehicles, water cannons, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) vehicles and Industrial Police vans, were also deployed at Chashara, a central area of the city.
Police said the heightened security measures had been put in place to ensure uninterrupted factory production and safeguard public safety on roads.
