Bangladesh builds talent for a semiconductor future
Bangladesh’s semiconductor industry is gradually overcoming one of its longstanding challenges—shortage of skilled manpower—as an increasing number of university students are preparing themselves for careers in semiconductor design and related fields.
Industry insiders said the growing interest among students in semiconductor-related subjects, along with the expansion of specialised academic programmes, is creating a stronger pool of local talent for the country’s emerging semiconductor sector.
Md. Muzammel Hossain, senior manager at Ulkasemi, said the situation has changed significantly over the past decade.
“Ten years ago, we could not find students with the required skills for the semiconductor industry. Now, skilled manpower is increasingly available in the local market,” he said.
According to him, a growing number of students are enrolling in semiconductor-related subjects and developing the technical expertise needed to enter the industry.
The development is particularly significant as Bangladesh seeks to establish itself as a potential hub for semiconductor design and other high-value technology services. The availability of skilled engineers and graduates is considered essential for attracting investment, expanding local companies and increasing the country's participation in the global semiconductor value chain.
Hossain said the increasing number of students interested in the sector reflects a growing awareness of the career opportunities available in semiconductor engineering.
The trend also indicates a shift in the country's higher education landscape, as students are increasingly looking beyond traditional engineering and technology careers and choosing specialised fields linked to the global electronics and semiconductor industries.
Industry stakeholders believe continued collaboration among universities, semiconductor companies and policymakers will be important to further develop industry-ready graduates.
With more students now preparing to enter the semiconductor sector, Bangladesh is gradually building the human-resource base required to support the industry's future expansion.
