Bangladesh wins bronze and project award at Biology Olympiad.
Bangladesh has achieved a notable milestone through it’s first-ever participation in the Open International Biology Olympiad (OIBO)-2026, earning international recognition on the global stage.
The Olympiad was held recently in the Sirius Federal Territory, Russia, bringing together more than 100 students from over 20 countries, according to a press release issued today.
Representing Bangladesh were Taseen Mohammad of BIAM Model School and College and Rupkotha Roy of Government Harganga College. The delegation was led by Afia Nowshen, lecturer at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB). The team’s participation and preparation activities were coordinated by the Sustainability and Life Sciences Network (SLSN), with support from Southeast Bank PLC.
The Olympiad consisted of three major components: theoretical examinations, practical examinations and a project round. Through his performance in the theoretical and practical sections, Taseen Mohammad earned an individual bronze medal.
In addition, Team Bangladesh received the prestigious “Project Winner” recognition in the project round titled “Practical Methods of Modern Botany.” This team-based recognition was achieved by Taseen Mohammad and Rupkotha Roy. The project incorporated a range of modern botanical research techniques, including field observations, ecological data collection, sample analysis, DNA-based investigations and morphological studies.
Despite participating with a comparatively small delegation, the Bangladeshi team successfully completed a wide range of research-oriented activities and demonstrated strong scientific, analytical and collaborative capabilities throughout the competition.
