Bangladesh, Thailand explore direct shipping link between Chattogram and Ranong ports

Bangladesh and Thailand have discussed the possibility of establishing a direct maritime link between Chattogram Port and Thailand's Ranong Port to reduce cargo transportation time and costs and boost bilateral trade.

The issue came up during a meeting between Shipping, Road Transport and Bridges, and Railways Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam and Thai Ambassador to Bangladesh Thitiporn Chirasawadi at the Ministry of Shipping in Dhaka Wednesday.

According to a press release from the ministry, the two sides discussed strengthening bilateral relations, expanding cooperation in ports and shipping, and increasing trade and investment.

The Thai ambassador said a direct shipping connection between Chattogram and Ranong could open up new opportunities for regional trade networks centred on the Bay of Bengal.

Such a link could significantly reduce the time and cost of transporting goods between the two countries while creating new opportunities for businesses and investors, she said.

The proposed connection could also contribute to broader regional connectivity and trade integration around the Bay of Bengal, beyond boosting bilateral commerce, the ambassador added.

Sheikh Robiul Alam welcomed the initiative, stressing the importance of modernising seaports and expanding international trade links to accelerate Bangladesh's economic growth.

He emphasised improving the capacity and operational efficiency of Chattogram Port to reduce cargo handling and transportation costs and make the country's import-export trade more efficient.

Bangladesh is interested in developing its shipping sector through cooperation, experience-sharing and effective partnerships with friendly countries, the minister said.

He assured the Thai ambassador of Bangladesh's cooperation in holding further discussions and taking necessary steps to explore the proposed maritime connection.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening longstanding bilateral ties and expanding cooperation in port development, maritime connectivity, trade and other areas of mutual interest.

Shipping Secretary Zakaria and senior ministry officials were present at the meeting.

No timeline or final decision on establishing the direct shipping link was announced in the press release.
