Land minister urges tougher action against drug traffickers.
Land Minister Mizanur Rahman Minu, MP, said
that those who are suddenly becoming owners of immense wealth and
constructing large mansions through drug trafficking are, in fact, enemies of
the nation.
These anti-social elements must be identified, socially boycotted, and
condemned.
He made these remarks today while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion
meeting and award distribution ceremony held at the Rajshahi Shilpakala
Academy auditorium on the occasion of "International Day Against Drug Abuse
and Illicit Trafficking".
The event was jointly organised by the Rajshahi District Administration and
the Department of Narcotics Control.
The venomous grip of drugs instantly destroys the assets of a promising
nation, the hopes of a family, and the long-standing dedication of a talented
life, the Land Minister said, adding, "A family raises a child through many
adversities, but addiction to drugs plunges that child's bright future into
darkness. As a result, not just one individual, but the entire family
suffers."
Citing China as an example, he said that at one time, the people of that
country were widely addicted to opium.
However, through the call of visionary leadership, they overcame that
situation and have now become one of the most developed countries in the
world.
He said the youth of Bangladesh must also raise their voices against drugs in
the same way, as they will lead the country and the international arena in
the future.
Stating that the government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against
drugs, the minister said that a policy decision was recently made in the
Cabinet to enforce even stricter laws against drug dealers, similar to other
countries.
He also informed that work is underway to establish a modern drug
rehabilitation center next to the RAB headquarters in Rajshahi, as well as a
children's hospital and other advanced medical service facilities, to ensure
proper treatment for drug addicts.
At the time, he said that drugs are entering Bangladesh through various means
from drug-producing networks in neighboring countries.
He instructed law enforcement agencies to be more stringent, vigilant, and
proactive on this matter.
The event was presided over by Deputy Commissioner Kazi Shahidul Islam.
Special guests included Divisional Commissioner Dr. ANM Bazlur Rashid,
Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) Administrator Mahfuzur Rahman Riton, Rajshahi
Range DIG Mohammad Shahjahan and RMP Commissioner Foyezul Kabir.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Naimul Hassan, Zila Parishad Administrator
Advocate Ershad Ali Esha and Additional Director of the Department of
Narcotics Control's Divisional Office Ali Aslam Hossain also spoke.
Officials and employees from various government and private offices, teachers
and students, distinguished citizens, and media personnel were present at the
event.
At the end of the programme, the Land Minister handed over prizes to the
winners of various competitions.
Earlier, a colorful rally was brought out from the Divisional Commissioner's
Office and ended at the District Shilpakala Academy premises after parading
through important city roads.
