Minister calls for justice over crimes against Rohingyas.

Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu today called for justice for crimes against humanity committed against the forcibly displaced Rohingya people.

The minister made the call during a meeting with Nicholas Koumjian, head of the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM) at his secretariat office here this afternoon.

The minister also urged the IIMM to play a strong role in restoring the legitimate rights of the displaced Rohingyas and facilitating their sustainable repatriation to Myanmar.

Nicholas Koumjian said that more than 154,000 Rohingya had crossed the border into Bangladesh since the beginning of 2024. They have joined more than one million Rohingya already living in Bangladesh, who remains unable to return safely because of violence and insecurity continue in Rakhine State of Myanmar.

The situation highlights the connection between the developments inside Myanmar and prolonged displacement of the Rohingyas in Bangladesh, he said.

The IIMM was established through United Nations Human Rights Council Resolution 39/2, adopted on September 27, 2018. The UN General Assembly also welcomed its establishment through the Resolution 73/264.

The mechanism, based in Geneva, began its operations in August 2019 under the leadership of Nicholas Koumjian.

The IIMM collects, consolidates, preserves and analyzes the evidences of the most serious international crimes and other violations of international law committed in Myanmar since 2011.
It assists efforts to establish justice and accountability by preparing and organizing evidence for use in criminal proceedings before national, regional and international courts.
