Family Cards to provide women Tk 2,500 monthly for self-reliance

State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasser Khan Choudhury, MP, said the government has taken an initiative to provide women Taka 2,500 per month through Family Cards to help them become self-reliant, fulfilling its election pledge after Prime Minister Tarique Rahman took office.

He made the remarks as the chief guest at a ceremony for distributing wheelchairs among persons with disabilities and sewing machines among extremely poor women at the conference room of the Nandail upazila administration in Mymensingh this afternoon.

Yasser said no one would have to pay any money to receive a Family Card, as it would be provided entirely free of charge.

"If anyone demands money in exchange for a Family Card, inform the administration," he said.

The state minister said sewing machines were being distributed as part of efforts to make every woman self-reliant.

"Use the sewing machine to create an income source. This income will help run your household, build some capital and allow you to save some money for emergencies.

"You can do many things with this opportunity. Gradually, you can establish a small-scale industry and generate a good income with 10 or 12 machines. Then you will not have to depend on anyone else. You will be able to stand on your own feet," he said.

The state minister expressed hope that women would become self-reliant through the sewing machines and, in time, be able to help others as well.

He sought everyone's cooperation to ensure the smooth implementation of such initiatives and their continuation in the future.

Nandail Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Fatema Jannat chaired the event. Other officials of the administration and BNP leaders were present.
