India must prove its friendship by renewing Ganges Treaty: Farhad
PANCHAGARH, Oct 11, 2026 (BSS)- State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad on Sunday said that India would have to prove as our friend by renewing the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty and ensuring equitable share of water with Bangladesh.
He expressed his belief that if India renews the treaty incorporating a guarantee clause and ensures the equitable sharing of water from the 54 rivers between the two nations, it will demonstrate that India is indeed a friendly state.
The State Minister said this while inspecting the project site for the construction of the Second Karatoya Bridge over the Karatoya River at Mirgarh area under Panchagarh Sadar Upazila here.
Farhad Hossain renewal of the agreement with a guarantee clause would resolve the controversy regarding India’s support to Bangladesh, proving that India is a true friend.
Officials and staff from the Roads and Highways Department (RHD), convener of the District BNP Zahirul Islam Kacchu and President and General Secretary of District Jubo Dal Ferdous Wahid Russel and Nuruzzaman Babu were present.
The bridge will be constructed at a cost of Taka 203 crore. Later, the state minister distributed leaflets among the traders at various locations in Panchagarh town, highlighting the irregularities and corruption of the previous Awami League government.
The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on October 7, 20206 approved the project to connect Bhajanpur at Tetulia Upazila with Mirgarh in Sadar Upazila.
The project is scheduled to complete by June 2030.
