Whip Dulu says government striving to meet expectations despite fragile economy
The government is working relentlessly to fulfil people's expectations despite the country's fragile economy, said Jatiya Sangsad Whip Advocate M. Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu today.
“After nearly 20 years of struggle, a democratic government has taken responsibility for the people. As a result, people's expectations from this government are high. The government is working relentlessly to meet those expectations in a country with a fragile economy,” he said.
Dulu also sought sincere cooperation from opposition parties that fought alongside the current ruling party in the movement to restore democracy, urging them to allow the government to work smoothly.
Dulu made the remarks as the chief guest at a discussion titled “People's Expectations and Achievements from the Current Democratically Elected Government” organised by the Bangladesh Open Democratic Council at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital.
The whip said democracy and a fair electoral system had been absent from the country for nearly two decades, as people's voting rights had been taken away.
He said the country had been freed from fascism through the movement, bloodshed and prolonged sacrifices of students, the public and various political parties, adding that people had regained democracy and the right to speak freely, said a press release of parliament secretariat.
Dulu said the country's economy had suffered due to widespread looting and money laundering under the previous government.
He said the current government had begun implementing welfare initiatives, including distributing family cards and agricultural cards and bringing imams and those responsible for religious places of worship under allowance programmes, to help ordinary people achieve social and economic self-reliance.
Referring to the issue of Sheikh Hasina's return to the country, Dulu said, “You come; we are waiting for you. The people of Bangladesh are waiting for you.”
Calling upon opposition parties to remain vigilant, he said everyone must work to ensure that the democracy achieved through struggle does not come under threat again.
He urged all political parties, irrespective of their positions in government or opposition, to remain united in sustaining the democratic process, preventing defeated fascist forces from regaining opportunities and rebuilding the economy.
The discussion was chaired by Md Ramiz Uddin Kazi.
Mostafa Kamal Majumder and lawmaker Shawkat Ara Akter Urmi addressed the event as the special guests. Political figures and journalists also attended the programme.
