Home minister orders swift arrests in SI Altaf murder case.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has directed police to swiftly arrest all those involved in the murder of Special Branch (SB) Sub-Inspector (unarmed) Md Altaf Hossain, who was killed in a brutal attack by criminals at Aminbazar in Savar.
The minister issued the directive when the bereaved family of the police officer met him at his office at the Secretariat this afternoon.
He assured the family that all necessary steps would be taken to ensure speedy justice in the case.
The minister said the police headquarters has already provided Tk 600,000 from its welfare fund to support the family.
He also announced necessary financial assistance, including loans from Community Bank Bangladesh Limited, to help keep the deceased officer’s family business running.
The minister further directed the authorities concerned to award Altaf Hossain the posthumous Police Medal (PPM) in recognition of his integrity, courage and dedicated service.
He handed over the financial assistance to the deceased officer’s wife, Mst Shyuli Parvin, during the meeting.
SI Altaf came under attack at around 7:30pm on September 5 while trying to settle an argument over parking an auto-rickshaw in Bordeshi Westpara of Aminbazar, Savar.
Seeking safety, he took shelter at his elder son’s business establishment.
Around 8:10pm, a group of attackers allegedly stormed the premises with local weapons, rods, pipes, hammers and sticks.
His younger son, Md Ariful Islam, was also seriously injured by sharp weapons while trying to save his father.
Locals later rescued the two and took them to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where the attending doctor declared SI Altaf dead.
The deceased’s wife filed a murder case with Savar Model Police Station, naming 15 people as accused.
Altaf joined Bangladesh Police as a constable from Sirajganj district in 1986.
During his nearly 40-year career, he served with the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Rangamati, RRF Rajshahi, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police and Barishal district police with integrity, dedication and professionalism.
He had been serving with Special Branch in Dhaka since 2011 until his death.
He is survived by his wife and two sons—Md Shariful Islam, 30, who completed his BSc in Pharmacy from Manarat University, and Md Ariful Islam, 24, who is studying mechanical engineering at UCEP Polytechnic Institute.
