India, Bangladesh discuss stronger defence engagement
India and Bangladesh have discussed ways to further strengthen defence cooperation and expand engagement between the armed forces of the two neighbouring countries.
Indian High Commissioner Shri Dinesh Trivedi met with Bangladesh’s Adviser to the Prime Minister for the Ministry of Defence and Armed Forces Division, Brigadier General (Retd.) AKM Shamsul Islam, on Wednesday (September 9).
According to a statement, the meeting focused on the longstanding bonds between the armed forces of India and Bangladesh, while the two sides exchanged views on a range of issues related to defence cooperation.
The discussions included possible areas for enhancing defence-related engagements between the two countries, reflecting their shared interest in expanding bilateral cooperation.
Both dignitaries expressed their commitment to further strengthening relations and working together in areas of mutual interest and benefit, the statement said.
The meeting comes as Bangladesh and India continue to maintain regular engagement on defence and security matters, alongside broader cooperation in areas including trade, connectivity, energy and people-to-people ties.
The two countries have historically maintained close institutional links between their armed forces, with defence cooperation forming one of the components of the broader bilateral relationship.
Wednesday’s meeting underscored the importance attached by both sides to sustaining the existing defence relationship and exploring new avenues for mutually beneficial cooperation.
