A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed today between the Ministry of Housing and Public Works and the Ministry of Youth and Sports to ensure preservation, maintenance and proper management of Dhanmondi playground, popularly known as 'Abahani Math', and Dhanmondi Ground.
The MoU was signed at the conference room of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works at the Secretariat here, a press release said.
Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department Md Khalequzzaman Chowdhury signed the deal on behalf of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, while Executive Director of the National
Sports Council Md Doulatuzzaman Khan signed on behalf of the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher and State Minister for Youth and Sports Md. Aminul Haque, among others, were present.
Speaking as the chief guest on the occasion, Minister Zakaria Taher said there is a shortage of adequate playgrounds in Dhaka and other major cities.
“Transferring these grounds to the Ministry of Youth and Sports under its efficient management will ensure their optimum use,” he said.
He said the government’s electoral pledge is to create sports opportunities in every neighbourhood and spread sports activities across the country.
State Minister Aminul said the government aims to eliminate politicisation of clubs, restore a neutral environment, develop international-standard infrastructure and open the grounds to the public and young people.
According to the MoU, the Ministry of Youth and Sports will preserve, maintain and manage the two grounds for five years.
