Bangladesh eyes Türkiye’s expertise in waste-to-energy, leather industry модерnisation
Bangladesh wants to utilise Türkiye’s experience in generating electricity from municipal and industrial waste and modernising its leather industry.
As part of the initiative, Commerce and Industries Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir has visited several key facilities in Istanbul on November 4-5 to gain insights into Türkiye’s technologies, operational practices and industrial infrastructure.
A press release of the ministry today said the visit highlighted potential areas of cooperation in technical assistance, training, technology transfer and investment partnerships between the two countries.
On November 4, the minister visited the waste incineration and power generation plant of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, where senior officials briefed him on different stages of processing household wastes and generating electricity from it.
Through presentations and on-site visit, he learned about the plant’s technology and operational activities.
The facility, operated by ?STAÇ, has a daily waste processing capacity of 3,000 tonnes and an installed electricity generation capacity of 85 megawatts.
The technology could offer opportunities for improving urban waste management in Bangladesh and reducing pressure on landfills, subject to assessments of local conditions, economic viability and environmental requirements.
On the same day, Muktadir visited the Istanbul Leather Organised Industrial Zone (?DOSB) in Tuzla.
Chairman of the zone’s board of directors Celal Koppuz, representatives of the industrial zone and two officials from Türkiye’s Ministry of Industry and Technology briefed him on its operations and economic contributions.
They highlighted the importance of planned industrial zones, shared infrastructure and centralised wastewater treatment facilities in leather production.
Such experiences could contribute to the modernisation of Bangladesh’s leather industrial zones, improvement of environmental compliance and enhancement of production efficiency.
The minister also visited the factory of Cevahir Leather Industry and Trade Co. Ltd., where he observed different stages of transforming raw hides into finished leather.
He was briefed on leather processing, tanning and finishing technologies, as well as the production of leather suitable for footwear and other products.
On November 5, the minister visited the Enerjram Thermal Disposal Facility in Sile, where hazardous industrial waste is treated through thermal processes and electricity is generated.
The facility, operated by Enerjram under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) arrangement within ?STAÇ’s integrated waste management framework, has an annual industrial waste treatment capacity of 33,000 tonnes and an installed power generation capacity of 5.6 megawatts.
The visits identified potential areas of cooperation with Turkish institutions in urban development, environmental management and industrial modernisation in Bangladesh.
The adoption of appropriate waste treatment and energy recovery technologies could improve industrial waste management while contributing supplementary electricity to the national grid.
Similarly, Türkiye’s experience could help Bangladesh strengthen centralised effluent treatment systems in the leather sector, improve production processes and increase value addition.
Through training, technology transfer and investment cooperation, Bangladesh could enhance industrial competitiveness, diversify exports and create new employment opportunities.
