Govt plans new economic hub centering Mongla Port in southern region
Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam today said the government has taken steps to establish a new economic hub centering Mongla Port in the southern region.
The minister was speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the newly elected representatives of the ‘Mongla Port Authority Employees’ Association’ at the Mongla Port Jetty.
He said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has visited Mongla Port twice in the last 15 days. He has laid emphasis on ensuring comprehensive development and unlocking the potential of the southwestern region.
In addition to solving the existing energy crisis, the government has already taken necessary steps to create facilities for industrialization and development of various sectors.
“Now there is a need for everyone's united efforts for relief, peace and progress. Otherwise, the capabilities and potential of the people of the greater Khulna, Faridpur and Barishal regions may be hampered again. Therefore, despite differences of opinion, everyone must agree in the national interest,” he added.
New container jetties, yards and modern equipment are being set up at Mongla Port, he said, adding that along with the initiative to establish a China EPZ here, new large industrial enterprises are being developed.
In addition, the work of expanding the highway from Bhanga to Mongla and establishing a new rail connection is progressing.
He said the economy, infrastructure and trade of the southern region will expand greatly around Mongla. As a result, new employment and investment opportunities will be created in the region, he added.
Chairman of Mongla Port Authority Rear Admiral Arif Ahmed Mustafa presided over the function, while Khulna Development Authority Chairman SM Shafiqul Alam Mona, Bagerhat District BNP Convener Engineer AT M Akram Hossain Talim, former President MA Salam, Central Executive Committee member Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Bagerhat District Council Administrator Barrister Mohammad Zakir Hossain attended the event.
Mongla Port Authority Director (Administration) Sheikh Mamunur Rahman and Election Management Committee Chairman and Mongla Municipality BNP President Md. Zulfikar Ali were also present, among others.
