President urges awareness against excessive fertilizer, pesticide use.
President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today stressed the need for creating awareness among farmers and other concerned to prevent indiscriminate use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
"Excessive and unnecessary use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides is causing severe long-term damage to soil health, the environment and public health. Farmers and all concerned must become much more aware to control the indiscriminate use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in agricultural land," he said.
The President made the call when a delegation of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) paid a courtesy call on him at the Bangabhaban here this afternoon, President's Press Secretary Md. Sarwar Alam told BSS.
Vice-Chancellor of SAU Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Latif led the delegation and briefed the President on the university's overall activities.
The President urged all agricultural universities and relevant institutions to work in a coordinated manner to make farmers aware and alert about the indiscriminate use of fertilizers and pesticides.
He also emphasized the effective implementation of research-based technologies at the field level, safe food production and environment-friendly agricultural practices to build a sustainable and modern agricultural system.
At the same time, the President called for establishing closer coordination among agricultural education, research and extension activities.
Secretaries of the President's Office were present at the meeting.
