Abdul Hye Sikder calls Sher-e-Bangla symbol of Bengali national soul

Chairman of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) and Editor of the Daily Jugantor, poet Abdul Hye Sikder, has said Sher-e-Bangla A.K. Fazlul Huq symbolizes the soul of the Bengali nation.

“Sher-e-Bangla is one of the key figures upon whose foundations Bangladesh stands. To deny Sher-e-Bangla, is to deny the country itself,” he said.

He made the remarks as the chief guest at a literary conference, organized by the Bangladesh Sangskritik Jote at Barishal Divisional Government Public Library today, marking the 153rd birth anniversary of Sher-e-Bangla.

Abdul Hye Sikder highlighted Sher-e-Bangla’s contributions to freeing farmers from the burden of moneylenders’ loans and promoting Muslim education during British rule. He also mentioned his close relationship with national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.

Expressing concern over the dilapidated condition of Sher-e-Bangla's memorial museum in Chakhar, Barishal, he called for urgent steps to preserve it.

He also demanded dedicated corners for Sher-e-Bangla, Kazi Nazrul Islam and Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman at the National Museum, expressing hope that the present government would address the demands.

Earlier, the conference was inaugurated by BNP leader and former MP Advocate Bilkis Akhtar Jahan Shirin.

The event was attended by prominent poets, writers, researchers and cultural personalities.
Professor Md. Moslem Uddin Sikder, former principal of Gournadi Government College, received the 'Sher-e-Bangla Memorial Award-2026'.

The conference aimed at highlighting Sher-e-Bangla's contributions to literature and culture and inspiring the younger generation."
