JS Speaker returns after assuming IPU Asia-Pacific Group chairmanship

Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikrom, returned home today after participating in the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) held in Arusha, Tanzania.

The Speaker assumed office as chairman of the IPU Asia-Pacific Group (APG) on October 5, receiving the responsibility from Bhutanese Speaker Tempa Dorji.

On the same day, Barrister Jahrat Adib Chowdhury, chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was elected as a member of the IPU Executive Committee representing the Asia-Pacific Group.

These appointments have strengthened Bangladesh's representation in international parliamentary diplomacy, said a press release issued by the JS Secretariat today.

The APG comprises 37 member countries. Bangladesh's leadership in the group is expected to strengthen the country's role in international parliamentary affairs.

A parliamentary delegation, led by the Speaker, arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, where officials from the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed them.

The Speaker was accompanied by Members of Parliament Barrister Jahrat Adib Chowdhury, Sayeed Al Noman, Sanjida Islam Tulee, Sarwar Jamal Nizam, A. E. Sultan Mahmud Babu, Md. Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, S. K. Azizul Bari, Humam Quader Chowdhury, Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem, Sunsila Jabrin and Rokeya Begum, along with Parliament Secretariat Secretary Barrister Md.
