Swiss envoy meets BNP leaders, discusses domestic, regional issues

DHAKA, Sept 14: Swiss Ambassador to Bangladesh Reto Renggli met with senior leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), including office-bearers of the party’s international affairs committee, at the Swiss Residence yesterday.

According to a post published by the Embassy of Switzerland in Bangladesh on its official Facebook page today, the meeting covered a range of domestic, regional and international issues.

The ambassador appreciated hearing the BNP representatives’ views on the issues discussed, the embassy said.

The meeting is part of Renggli’s ongoing engagement with Bangladesh’s major political parties, according to the Swiss mission.

The latest interaction comes as foreign diplomats in Dhaka continue to engage with political stakeholders on issues concerning Bangladesh’s domestic political landscape and its regional and international relations.

The Swiss embassy did not disclose details of the specific issues discussed or identify the BNP representatives who attended the meeting.

Renggli has previously held meetings with BNP leaders as part of his diplomatic engagement with the party. In January this year, he paid a courtesy call on BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, when the two sides discussed ways to further strengthen Bangladesh-Switzerland bilateral relations.

Switzerland and Bangladesh maintain broad cooperation in areas including development, humanitarian assistance, economic relations and political exchanges. The Swiss embassy says the two countries have built a partnership spanning more than five decades.
