Social welfare minister pledges development beyond party considerations
Social Welfare Minister Abu Zafar Md Zahid Hossain today said he wants to work for overall development putting aside partisan considerations and focusing on the welfare of all.
“Not from a party perspective, but with the mindset of working for the welfare of everyone, I want to work together for the development of this ministry,” he said at a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on his ministry.
The first meeting of the committee was held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban here with committee chairman Md Shahjahan in the chair.
Members of the committee, including Social Welfare Minister Abu Zafar Md Zahid Hossain, State Minister for Social Welfare Farzana Sharmin, Sarwar Jamal Nizam, Mohammad Salman Omar, Arifa Sultana, Nipun Ray Chowdhury and Md Mojibur Rahman, attended the meeting.
In his welcome speech, the committee chairman called for the ministry and the standing committee to work together on the basis of cooperation to improve the living standards of the people at the grassroots level.
A power-point presentation on the overall activities of the ministry as well as its subordinate directorates and organizations, was presented during the meeting of the standing committee.
The State Minister for Social Welfare said the ministry’s activities have made significant contributions to the public welfare. He appreciated the ministry’s work and stressed the importance of undertaking coordinated and contemporary programmes.
Committee member Md Mojibur Rahman called upon the ministry to involve local MPs in implementing activities at the upazila level.
The meeting was informed that, under the Family Card Programme, which began as a pilot programme on March 10, 2026, activities have so far been implemented in 56 wards across 54 upazilas in 52 districts.
The meeting began with an introductory session involving all members of the standing committee and officials of the ministry, its divisions and departments.
The Secretary of the Ministry of Social Welfare, senior officials of the ministry, its divisions and departments and senior officials of the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat concerned with the committee were also present at the meeting.
