Algerian Embassy in Dhaka Commemorates National Mujahid Day
DHAKA, August 20, 2026: The Embassy of Algeria in Dhaka on Thursday commemorated National Mujahid Day, highlighting two pivotal milestones in Algeria’s liberation struggle—the North Constantine Offensive of August 20, 1955, and the Soummam Congress of August 20, 1956.
The commemoration was held at 11:00 a.m. in the presence of members of the diplomatic community, Bangladeshi officials, distinguished guests and friends of Algeria. The event was held on behalf of Algerian Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Abdelouahab Saidani.
This year’s observance carried the official slogan, “We Follow in Their Footsteps of Struggle,” underscoring the enduring values of unity, sacrifice, loyalty and commitment to national sovereignty.
In remarks delivered at the ceremony, the Embassy highlighted the historical and strategic significance of the two milestones in Algeria’s independence movement.
The North Constantine Offensive, led by revolutionary leader Zighout Youcef, demonstrated broad popular support for the National Liberation Front (FLN), expanded the armed struggle and contributed to the internationalisation of the Algerian question, including at the United Nations.
A year later, the Soummam Congress marked a decisive phase in organising the Algerian Revolution by strengthening political and military coordination and establishing important institutional foundations for the future Algerian state.
Together, the two events reflected the popular support, strategic organisation and determination that shaped Algeria’s struggle for independence.
The Embassy said the legacy of August 20 continues to influence Algeria’s national identity and foreign policy, particularly through the principles of sovereignty, unity, self-determination and solidarity with peoples defending their legitimate rights.
The commemoration also drew parallels between Algeria’s liberation struggle and Bangladesh’s Liberation War, noting that both struggles were shaped by political and socio-economic inequality, cultural suppression, popular mobilisation and the pursuit of self-determination and national sovereignty.
The shared historical experiences, the Embassy said, continue to strengthen the bonds of friendship, solidarity and mutual understanding between the peoples of Algeria and Bangladesh.
