Maldives highlights Bay of Bengal’s strategic importance, eyes stronger ties with Bangladesh
DHAKA, Oct 8, 2026: The Maldives has underscored the growing strategic and economic importance of the Bay of Bengal, highlighting opportunities for deeper regional cooperation and stronger bilateral engagement with Bangladesh.
Maldives High Commissioner to Bangladesh Shiuneen Rasheed made the remarks while participating as a panellist at the Bay of Bengal Conversation, during a Leadership Forum session titled “Why the Bay Matters to the World.”
The Maldives High Commissioner to Bangladesh shared at their official social media on Wednesday night.
The discussion focused on the evolving geopolitical, economic and maritime significance of the Bay of Bengal for South Asia and the wider region.
Rasheed highlighted the opportunities and challenges emerging from the changing maritime landscape, particularly for small states such as the Maldives.
She also shared perspectives on the Maldives’ foreign policy priorities and its growing partnership with Bangladesh, according to the Maldives High Commission in Dhaka.
The High Commissioner emphasised the scope for further strengthening Maldives-Bangladesh bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest, reflecting the two countries’ shared interests in the wider Bay of Bengal region.
The discussion comes amid growing attention to the Bay of Bengal as an important maritime space connecting South and Southeast Asia and supporting trade, connectivity, energy, fisheries and other economic activities.
For the Maldives, a small island nation whose economy and strategic interests are closely linked to the Indian Ocean, developments in the Bay of Bengal carry wider regional implications.
Rasheed’s participation also highlighted the potential for greater cooperation between Dhaka and Malé as both countries seek to expand engagement on issues of common interest.
The Bay of Bengal Conversation brings together policymakers, diplomats, academics, business leaders and other stakeholders to discuss strategic and economic developments shaping the region.
