Five students and three team leaders with one team observer will represent Bangladesh at the Multinational Youth Geography Olympiad (MY-GEO) 2026, scheduled for October 24–31 in Sirius, Russia.
A nine-member delegation from Bangladesh is preparing to travel to Russia to participate in the Multinational Youth Geography Olympiad (MY-GEO) 2026, which will take place from October 24 to 31 in the Sirius Federal Territory, near Sochi.
The Bangladesh team consists of five students from educational institutions across the country, accompanied by three team leaders. And they have one team observer in Bangladesh to keep them aligned. They will join students from BRICS member states and other participating countries in an international competition focused on geographical knowledge, analytical thinking, and practical problem-solving.
The Olympiad is designed for students aged 15 to 18 and covers a wide range of subjects, including physical and human geography, environmental management, climate change, natural resources, and sustainable regional development.
Six Students Selected Through Team Selection Test
Zero Competitions Limited announced the Bangladesh delegation in an official notice issued on October 10, 2026.
According to the announcement, the students were selected through a Team Selection Test (TST) held at the Russian House in Dhaka. The assessment evaluated geographical knowledge, analytical reasoning, and the ability to approach and solve unfamiliar problems.
The six selected students are Minhajul Islam Tahmid of Birshreshtha Munshi Abdur Rouf Public College, Shahriar Noor of Government Science College, Md Tawsikul Islam of Agrani School and College in Rajshahi, Arifa Atiq Mim of Netrokona Government College, and Tanvir Sadat of Notre Dame College.
The three team leaders accompanying the students are Md Ayman Mahmud and Taseen Mohammad from the University of Dhaka, and Ferdous Ahmed from BRAC University. Ahnaf Tahmid Uddin of BRAC University will also accompany the delegation as the Team Observer.
The delegation's participation is being coordinated by Zero Competitions Limited and the Sustainability and Life Sciences Network (SLSN), with cooperation from the Russian House and the University of Dhaka.
Beyond the Classroom: Three Rounds of Competition
MY-GEO 2026 will feature three main rounds: theoretical, multimedia, and practical. Each round will examine different aspects of geographical understanding and the ability to apply scientific knowledge.
The theoretical round will cover topics such as physical geography, human and economic geography, environmental systems, climate change, and regional development. Students will be required to analyse geographical situations and develop reasoned responses rather than simply reproduce memorised information.
In the multimedia round, participants will work with maps, satellite imagery, statistical datasets, and other geographical materials. They will be expected to interpret the information, identify geographical patterns, and draw conclusions from the evidence presented.
The practical round will involve field observations in and around Sirius and the Black Sea coast. Participating teams will collect geographical information, analyse their findings, prepare maps, and develop proposals addressing regional development challenges.
The competition will be conducted in English. Alongside individual knowledge and reasoning, teamwork and collaborative problem-solving will play an important role.
Educational Activities Alongside the Competition
The event will be hosted in the Sirius Federal Territory, located along Russia's Black Sea coast near the Caucasus Mountains.
Sirius is known for its educational and scientific institutions, including the Sirius Educational Center and Sirius University. The area has developed into a centre for academic, scientific, and technological activities.
In addition to the competition rounds, participants will have opportunities to attend educational sessions, scientific lectures, and workshops on topics such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, environmental conservation, and regional development.
These activities will also allow students to interact with participants, researchers, and specialists from different countries.
Accommodation and meals for participating students and eligible team leaders will be arranged by the host organisers, while international travel expenses will remain the responsibility of the sending side.
Bangladesh Geography Olympiad to Be Held Annually
Alongside Bangladesh's participation in MY-GEO 2026, efforts are underway to establish a regular national platform for students interested in geography and geology.
The Bangladesh Geography Olympiad (BGeO) will be organised annually from now on, providing opportunities for school and college students to explore geography, geology, and related Earth sciences.
The initiative aims to encourage greater student engagement with these subjects and expand opportunities for participation in international geography and Earth science competitions.
Information about future editions of BGeO, including registration details and announcements, will be available through the Olympiad's official Facebook page and the communication channels of Zero Competitions and SLSN.
An Opportunity for International Experience
For the six selected students, MY-GEO 2026 will provide an opportunity to test their knowledge alongside peers from other countries and experience different approaches to geographical problem-solving.
The field-based activities and analytical challenges are expected to offer practical exposure to geographical research, spatial analysis, and environmental studies.
The experience may also help participating students develop a broader understanding of how geography is studied and applied beyond the classroom.
With the competition approaching, the nine-member Bangladesh delegation is preparing to represent the country in an international academic event that combines geographical knowledge, scientific investigation, and cultural exchange.
