Gayeshwar vows to protect democracy, public safety in Bangladesh
BNP standing committee member and lawmaker from Dhaka-3 Gayeshwar Chandra Roy today said a situation where the advancement of democracy is halted will not be allowed to emerge in Bangladesh in any circumstances.
He said it is the administration's responsibility to restrain those, who harbour a fascist mentality and are secretly engaged in various subversive activities and acts of sabotage, to bring them to justice, to ensure they face trial, and to guarantee the people's safety.
Gayeshwar made the remarks after paying floral tributes at the graves of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, located at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital this morning.
He said many have made the ultimate sacrifice - becoming martyrs, falling victim to enforced disappearances and killings, or enduring imprisonment and persecution - through a long series of struggles.
"Yet, with the fall of fascism on August 5, we have managed to initiate the restoration of Zia's vision, multiparty democracy, and our independence and sovereignty," he said.
He added, "We have succeeded in driving the fascists out of this country. Fascism is gone, and its leadership has gone, but many people who embody the character of fascism still remain in Bangladesh."
The BNP standing committee member said, "We occasionally witness signs of this. Incidents such as sudden processions at dawn, the bursting of firecrackers and bomb blasts - aimed at destabilising public life and disrupting the march of democracy - have caused concern among people across the country."
He said the BNP leaders and activists at all levels remain vigilant to this end on behalf of the people.
Under no circumstances, he said, the government will allow a situation to develop in Bangladesh that disrupts democracy.
Gayeshwar said the government will surely take an active stance to ensure the safety of lives and properties of people in this regard.
He said it is the administration's responsibility to restrain the cohorts of fascism who are secretly engaged in various acts of sabotage, bring them to justice, and ensure public safety.
