Brunei Launches Nationwide Labour Survey, Selected Households Face BND4,000 Fine for Non-Compliance

Dhaka, October 14, 2026: Brunei Darussalam is conducting a nationwide Labour Force Survey (LFS) 2026 to gather updated data on employment, unemployment and workforce characteristics, with selected households facing a fine of up to BND4,000 for failing to provide required information or submitting false particulars.

The survey is being conducted from October 5 to November 1 by the Department of Economic Planning and Statistics (DEPS) under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, according to a media release from the department.

The initiative aims to collect the latest information on the size, structure, distribution and characteristics of the country's labour force, alongside broader economic characteristics of its population.

The findings are expected to support national planning, research, policymaking and labour force management.

Around 3,200 selected households across Brunei are expected to participate in the survey. DEPS-appointed survey officers will conduct face-to-face interviews using Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI).

The survey is being carried out under Brunei Darussalam's Statistics Act, Chapter 81. Under Section 9 of the act, failure or reluctance to provide the required information, or furnishing false particulars, constitutes an offence punishable by a fine of BND4,000.

DEPS has assured participating households that all information collected will remain strictly confidential and be used exclusively for statistical purposes.

The department said selected households would receive official notification letters explaining the purpose of the survey.

It also urged residents to verify the identities of survey officers by checking their survey passes, appointment letters, identity card numbers and official vests.

To protect the public from potential fraud, DEPS clarified that survey officers would not request payments, personal passwords, bank details or other financial information.

The Labour Force Survey is intended to provide an updated statistical picture of Brunei's labour market, helping authorities assess workforce conditions and inform decisions on employment and economic development.
