Chawkbazar Plaza Fire Controlled After 12-Hour Battle
Firefighters brought a blaze at Manjur Khan Plaza in Chawkbazar, Dhaka, under control early today after more than 12 hours of frantic efforts.
“The fire was brought under control at 5:20 am today after more than 12 hours of firefighting efforts,” Fire Service and Civil Defence media officer Talha bin Zasim confirmed in a text message.
Earlier, at a briefing on the spot, Lt Col Md Mahmudul Hasan, director of operations and maintenance of the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD), said the fire broke out on the sixth floor of the seven-storey building beside AC Mosque in Chhota Katra at around 5:02 pm on Monday.
Ten Fire Service units worked to bring the blaze under control, he said.
The fire originated in a godown on the building’s sixth floor.
Several godowns storing cosmetics, electronic goods and umbrellas were reportedly affected by the fire.
Thick black smoke billowing from the building made firefighting operations challenging, Hasan said.
Two firefighters suffered smoke-related injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.
The Fire Service received information about the incident at 5:04pm on Monday and dispatched firefighting units to the scene immediately.
The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage were not immediately known, he said.
No casualties have so far been reported, Hasan added.
