UNDP support need for Sustainable Development
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has welcomed Bangladesh’s renewed contribution to its core (regular) resources, underscoring Dhaka’s continued commitment to multilateral cooperation and sustainable development.
The Government has made its annual contribution in the form of flexible funding—widely regarded as critical for enabling rapid responses to emerging crises and tackling increasingly complex global challenges.
The move comes as Bangladesh intensifies efforts to sustain inclusive economic growth, strengthen climate resilience and promote accountable governance—priorities that align closely with UNDP’s global mandate.
“We deeply value our five-decade-long partnership with Bangladesh, and this contribution to UNDP core resources is a strong testament to that relationship,” said Kanni Wignaraja, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and UNDP Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific. “As Bangladesh progresses towards key milestones, including graduation from Least Developed Country status, its continued support for multilateralism reflects a firm commitment to advancing sustainable development globally.”
Echoing that sentiment, Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said the contribution reflects both national priorities and global responsibility.
“Bangladesh is proud to reaffirm its commitment to multilateral cooperation and to strengthening the global development architecture, including through UNDP, our trusted partner since independence in 1971,” he said. “This contribution highlights the newly elected government’s resolve to advance sustainable development at home and abroad. We are equally committed to sharing Bangladesh’s development experience with countries across the Global South.”
Flexible core funding remains central to UNDP’s ability to deliver on its Strategic Plan, which spans more than 170 countries and territories. Such contributions allow the organisation to allocate resources where they are most needed, while also reinforcing oversight, accountability, and transparency across its programmes.
UNDP officials note that sustained support from member states like Bangladesh plays a pivotal role in ensuring development initiatives remain responsive, effective, and inclusive—particularly at a time of mounting global uncertainty.
