Strengthen waste management
The Dhaka North City Corporation has officially launched its “Source Segregation” initiative as part of a major effort to strengthen waste management and keep the capital city clean and environmentally sustainable.
The inauguration ceremony was held in Gulshan on Tuesday morning, where green and yellow waste bins along with polybags were distributed among institutions and community representatives.
Administrator of DNCC, Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan, attended the program as the chief guest, while Chief Waste Management Officer Commodore Mohammad Humayun Kabir joined as the special guest.
Speaking at the event, the DNCC administrator stressed the importance of civic responsibility in ensuring a cleaner Dhaka. He urged residents to develop the habit of disposing waste in designated bins instead of throwing garbage on roads and open spaces.
He said DNCC would conduct awareness campaigns through local societies, mosque committees, educational institutions and homeowners’ associations to encourage public participation in proper waste disposal practices.
Officials said the source segregation initiative is a key part of DNCC’s broader waste management strategy, which also includes mosquito control, canal and drain cleaning, and citywide sanitation improvement activities.
Commodore Humayun Kabir said waste segregation at source is the foundation of modern waste management and is clearly outlined in the Solid Waste Management Rules 2021.
Under the first phase of the project, DNCC is prioritizing high-traffic public places including mosques, temples, churches, educational institutions, markets and transport terminals.
Initially, 500 fiber bins — including 250 green bins and 250 yellow bins — are being distributed. Each bin is supplied with 100 polybags and instructional labels explaining how different categories of waste should be separated.
DNCC officials said the initiative would gradually be expanded across all 10 zones of the city corporation in phases.
