SABCCI warns of risks to 13,000 Bangladeshi workers amid Saudi tensions

DHAKA, October 14, 2026 — The Saudi Arabia-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SABCCI) has expressed concern over the ongoing conflict and security situation in the Middle East, warning of potential risks to Bangladeshi workers, remittance flows and bilateral trade.

In a statement issued today, the chamber said the cancellation of 82 flights in recent days had reportedly disrupted the travel of more than 13,000 Bangladeshi workers heading to Saudi Arabia to join their workplaces.

SABCCI called on the Bangladesh government and relevant international stakeholders to take urgent steps to ensure the safety of Bangladeshis and other people in Saudi Arabia and pursue a peaceful resolution through dialogue.

The chamber warned that prolonged instability could affect employment, remittances, imports and exports, trade and investment, with potential consequences for Bangladesh's economy.

It said delays in workers' arrival at their workplaces could put their jobs and the financial security of their families at risk. Any prolonged disruption could also affect Bangladesh's foreign currency earnings, it added.

SABCCI urged the government, relevant ministries, manpower and employment authorities, and international partners to coordinate efforts to resolve the uncertainty facing workers travelling to Saudi Arabia.

Possible measures include extending visa validity where necessary, coordinating with Saudi employers to arrange alternative joining dates and providing administrative and financial assistance to affected workers, the chamber said.

Emphasising the longstanding friendly ties between Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia, SABCCI said restoring stability was important for protecting the interests of both countries and maintaining economic and commercial cooperation.

The chamber expressed condolences to those affected by the conflict, including Bangladeshis, and called for effective diplomatic engagement and international dialogue to bring about a swift and peaceful resolution.

It also urged all concerned parties to ensure the safety, employment and welfare of Bangladeshi expatriates in Saudi Arabia while safeguarding bilateral trade and investment ties.
